Step-by-Step Guide
Deactivate vs. Delete — Know the Difference
Deactivation is temporary: your profile disappears, no one can find you, but all your photos, followers, and messages are preserved. Deletion is permanent and irreversible after 30 days. This guide covers deactivation only.
Go to Accounts Center > Personal Details
Open Instagram and go to your profile. Tap the menu icon (☰) in the top-right corner, then tap Settings and privacy. Scroll down to Accounts Center and tap it. Select Personal details, then Account ownership and control.
Select Deactivation
Tap Deactivation or deletion, then choose your Instagram account from the list. Select Deactivate account — not Delete. Choose a reason from the dropdown, enter your password, and tap Deactivate.
What Happens After & How to Reactivate
Your profile, posts, comments, and likes immediately become invisible to others. Your DMs still exist but recipients see you as 'Instagram User'. To reactivate, simply log back in with your username and password — everything restores instantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I keep Instagram deactivated?
Instagram does not enforce a maximum deactivation period. You can keep your account deactivated indefinitely. Just log back in whenever you're ready to return.
Can people still message me while my account is deactivated?
Existing DM threads remain visible to recipients but your name shows as 'Instagram User'. No new messages can reach you while deactivated, but they will appear once you reactivate.
Will deactivating Instagram also deactivate my Facebook?
No. Even though both are managed through Meta Accounts Center, deactivating Instagram only affects Instagram. You can deactivate each account independently.
