How to Install a Ceiling Fan

Replace a light fixture with a ceiling fan safely

Quick Answer

Turn off power + verify with tester. Check for fan-rated box. Mount bracket, hang motor, connect wires (match colors). Attach blades, test.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Turn Off Power & Verify

Turn off circuit breaker for the room. Use a voltage tester to confirm no power at the wires. Don't skip this!

💡Tape breaker OFF to prevent someone turning it on while you work.
2

Check/Install Fan-Rated Box

Ceiling fans need a fan-rated electrical box that supports 50+ lbs. Replace if existing box isn't rated.

💡Regular light boxes can't hold fan weight and vibration. This is a safety requirement.
3

Assemble and Mount Fan

Assemble fan per instructions. Attach mounting bracket to ceiling box. Hang motor from bracket. Connect wires: black to black, white to white, green/bare to green/bare.

💡Most fans have a hook to hang motor while you connect wires.
4

Attach Blades and Test

Install blades with screws provided. Attach light kit if included. Turn on power. Test both fan and light (if applicable).

💡If fan wobbles, check that all blades are same distance from ceiling.
